The History of Marina di Novaglie

The history of Marina di Novaglie is deeply tied to the sea, with roots dating back to ancient times. Many caves in the area were inhabited during prehistoric times, as proven by archaeological findings. During the Middle Ages, the caves were used as spiritual retreats by Basilian monks and later as shelters by local fishermen.

The name “Novaglie” may originate from land reclamation works carried out in the 11th century, when the previously wooded and rocky coastline was made habitable. In the 16th century, to protect against Saracen pirate raids, a watchtower was built — the Torre del Porto, now in ruins. During World War II, Novaglie’s coast became a strategic maritime observation point.

Today, despite the passage of time, Marina di Novaglie has preserved its wild and authentic soul, becoming an ideal destination for nature lovers, sea enthusiasts, and those in search of tranquillity.

Marina di Novaglie is perfect for those seeking crystal-clear waters, unspoilt nature, and a genuine atmosphere. Far from the more crowded tourist spots, here you can experience the true essence of Salento.
